TIGER (PANTHERA TIGRIS)
Tigers (Panthera tigris) are divided into nine subspecies spread across Asia, from mainland Turkey to Russia and Indonesia. However, only six tiger subspecies remain in the world today. The other three tiger subspecies are extinct. Only preserved specimens of Caspian tigers (Panthera tigris virgata) in museums are proof of their existence. In Indonesia, the Sumatran tiger is the only tiger left. Its siblings, the Bali tiger (Panthera tigris balica) and the Java tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica) have become extinct in the last 50 years. Bali and Java tigers were last known to exist in the late 1930s and 1970s respectively.
