SUSTAINABILITY STANDARDS FOR REEF FISHERIES
By Windy Rizki
WWF Indonesia together with Yayasan Reef Check Indonesia as a member of the Responsible Fisheries Network Nusantara (JARING-Nusantara) is again assisting fishermen groups in Sumberkima Village, Gerokgak District, Buleleng Regency, Bali. The assistance was carried out by equipping fishermen with BMP (Better Management Practices) training or guidelines for responsible fisheries practices. The BMP training was conducted on September 14, 2014 at the Sumberkima Village fishermen group hall and attended by 35 fishermen who are members of the Sumberkima Village fishermen group. In addition, the training was attended by the Buleleng Regency Marine and Fisheries Service (DKP), Singaraja Field Extension Officers (PPL), and the Gerokgak District Fish Seed Market.
The training began with a brief explanation of JARING-Nusantara. An initial test of BMPs was given to participants before the delivery of material on BMPs was delivered. This initial test aimed to determine the fishermen's level of understanding about sustainable and responsible fisheries. A number of challenges were faced during the BMP presentation. Some fishermen had limited reading and writing skills, so they had to be assisted in answering each question of the BMP pretest.
The presentation of Reef Fish Fisheries BMP material delivered by Davidson Rato Nono as a representative of WWF-Indonesia received attention from fishermen who wanted to know good fish packaging so that quality is guaranteed and can increase selling prices. Simulations of sustainable fisheries in the form of games were also given, with the aim that fishermen realize the importance of carrying out sustainable fisheries practices so that fisheries remain sustainable.
At the end of the event, discussions and questions and answers between fishermen, WWF-Indonesia, and DKP were closed with a final test to fishermen to find out how far the material was absorbed by the participants. The results of the final test have increased the score which when accumulated amounted to 1560 to 1720, a not too significant increase of about 10% which means that the absorption of BMP knowledge has not been absorbed too much by fishermen. To be able to improve these results, BMP training will be held every 3 months which will be facilitated by Reef Check Indonesia. The long-term hope to be achieved by this training is that fishermen can market their fish at a better price.
