One of the organizations that promotes sustainable fisheries is Seafood Savers WWF-Indonesia. Since its inception, in 2009, the number of active members in improving fisheries activities is predicted to continue to grow with the joining of new companies and retailers in the Seafood Savers membership.
One of them is PT Primo Indo Ikan as a company engaged as a producer of fresh fish and frozen fish such as skipjack, tuna and other commodities. PT Primo Indo Ikan has a partnership scheme with fishing fleets in the Flores Sea waters. The company runs its business to meet the market share of North America, South America, Central America and Southeast Asia.
Located in Denpasar, Bali, the company started its fisheries business in 2009. Since its establishment until today, PT Primo Indo Ikan continues to expand and develop its fishery activities in order to market quality seafood products. Besides the awareness of the sustainability of fish resources, the market demand for sustainable seafood is also increasing. For this reason, PT Primo Indo Ikan decided to contribute to the fisheries improvement program with WWF-Indonesia. This determination is done by registering as a member of Seafood Savers, a program initiated by WWF-Indonesia for the creation of environmentally friendly fisheries activities.
PT Primo Indo Ikan entered the initial stage of Seafood Savers membership in 2015. After passing through several stages, PT Primo Indo Ikan reached the stage of membership inauguration. The inauguration was carried out by signing a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation Agreement for Seafood Savers Members in March 2017. Taking place in Bali, this signing became the legal basis for both parties to make improvements towards the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) ecolabel certification.
In accordance with the Seafood Savers membership mechanism, PT Primo Indo Ikan will carry out an improvement program for skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) and yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares)in accordance with MSC principles. The improvement of these fisheries activities will be assisted by WWF-Indonesia team through the Fisheries Improvement Program (FIP) for 5 years. In the last year of membership, Seafood Savers and WWF Indonesia target PT Primo Indo Ikan to register skipjack and yellowfin tuna for MSC fisheries certification.
