SHRIMP PRODUCERS IN JEMBER TAKE ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION
Jember, 10 January 2020 - Joining WWF-Indonesia's fisheries improvement program through Seafood Savers membership in 2017, PT Mega Marine Pride became one of the companies committed to start implementing a sustainable aquaculture system in part of its production by referring to the principles of the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). The company has achieved ASC certification for one of their supply chains, PT Delta Guna Sukses in Jember, and is currently in the process of its first surveillance audit by an accredited auditor. With the commitment and support of good farm management by PT Delta Guna Sukses, the company maintains its status as one of the ASC certified companies.
In order to support sustainable aquaculture, PT Mega Marine Pride continues to carry out various environmental programs that are integrated in various CSR activities. Coupled with the effects of global warming that has emerged in recent decades, PT Mega Marine Pride Group took steps to conserve the environment by planting thousands of mangrove and cypress trees in Jember Regency.
Commitment to the implementation of the principles contained in the ASC is realized in various activities such as the implementation of a waste treatment system so as to minimize pollution, the use of feed that has traceability and good sources of fish oil and fish meal (from responsible fisheries sources), as well as activities to improve the ecosystem around the pond by planting mangroves and other coastal vegetation. Until 2019 PT DGS has planted 2700 mangrove trees, 3000 shrimp cypress trees and 1000 Jaranan trees.
In order to continue to support this sustainable cultivation effort, PT Mega Marine Pride continues to carry out various programs through CSR activities. Coupled with the effects of global warming that is increasingly felt, PT Mega Marine Pride Group is taking steps to conserve the environment by replanting thousands of mangrove and cypress trees in Jember Regency.
The tree planting is an implementation of PT Mega Marine Pride Group's four CSR pillars and is one of the Aquaculture Improvement Project (AIP) activities or improvement of shrimp farming practices with WWF-Indonesia. This program aims to support environmental sustainability that involves synergistic cooperation between companies, communities and stakeholders. The planting ceremony was attended by Managing Director of PT MMP Group, Rachmad Hartojo, along with other directors.
Adi Surya Dewanto representing the Board of Directors of PT Mega Marine Pride Group said that tree planting needs to be intensified in order to create a green and clean environment. This tree planting is one of PT Mega Marine Pride Group's CSR programs that has been carried out since 2008. The location that was planted this time was located in Kepanjen Village, Gumukmas District, Jember Regency. A total of 1500 trees were planted consisting of 1000 shrimp cypress tree seedlings (Casuarina equisetifolia)and 500 early maturing mangrove tree seedlings (Rhizophora mucronata).
"The increase of trees will increase the amount of oxygen which is very important for the ecosystem. The planting that we do is an important step to resist abrasion and break the waves in the event of a tsunami. This time we added the planting of cypress seedlings as a form of support for the government's environmental program," explained Adi Surya Dewanto.
Through this activity, PT Mega Marine Pride Group shows that efforts that have a direct impact on the environment can be carried out with the synergy of various parties. This planting activity involved the company's buyer (Costco Wholesale), NGOs, Babinsa, Police and the local community.
"We feel happy and proud to be part of this activity. Hopefully the Mega Marine Pride group can continue to maintain and be consistent with this kind of environmental activity in the years to come," said Robert Huskey, Vice President of Costco Wholesale.
In addition to the environmental program, a health program was also carried out, namely free medical examination and treatment services for local residents. This activity took place on the same day Friday (10/01) at PT Delta Guna Sukses, one of the Mega Marine Pride groups. In the CSR activity, there were 119 residents from three villages namely Kepanjen, Mojomulyo and Mayangan who received services.
