SHRIMP FISHERIES IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM IN CENTRAL JAVA
PT Cassanatama Naturindo, based in Semarang, Central Java, began its efforts to produce environmentally friendly shrimp crackers in 2017. The company also collaborates with local fishermen groups, where the fishermen play a role as the company's suppliers in providing shrimp caught with environmentally friendly fishing gear. A member of Seafood Savers since 2016, PT Cassanatama Naturindo together with WWF-Indonesia assisted fishermen to start recording their catch or logbook.
This effort was made to collect information related to catch data needed to support the management of shrimp resources in Central Java. There are 5 fishermen groups partnering with PT Cassanatama Naturindo, each located in Demak Regency, Central Java. WWF-Indonesia also contributed in inspecting the fishing gear used by the fishermen, to ensure that the shrimp were caught using sustainable and non-destructive fishing gear.
After ensuring that fishermen use 3-layer Trammel Net and Trap net, PT Cassanatama Naturindo also collaborated with academics to collect information on the condition of shrimp resources in Demak. WWF-Indonesia fully supports this collaboration as one of the first steps in obtaining a Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certificate, considering that obtaining certification requires high commitment.
In MSC certification, there are 3 principles, namely the status of catch taret stocks, the impact of fishing activities on the environment, and effective fisheries governance, as well as 28 assessment indicators that must be met by the company. This requires compliance and cooperation from all stakeholders in Central Java to the central level to be able to move PT Cassanatama Naturindo towards MSC certification. This effort towards MSC certification also received good support from the Buyer of PT Cassanatama Naturindo. This support is a very good point, where the market participates in the process. The hope is that with the support of the market, it can accelerate the process of obtaining MSC certificates. With the ecolabel certificate, it will raise the name of fishery products in Central Java, especially shrimp crackers in the world market and provide welfare for fishing communities.
To determine the position of shrimp fisheries in Demak in meeting MSC certification standards, PT Cassanatama Naturindo is supported by its buyer in collaboration with Peterson Control Union as a Conformity Assessment Body (CAB) in carrying out MSC initial assessments on their fishermen in Demak. The initial MSC assessment, which has been conducted since June 10, 2020 and is still running until now, aims to determine the level of gap between existing shrimp fishing practices in the field and the MSC standard. Currently, the initial assessment process is still in the stage of collecting data and information needed in accordance with the 28 assessment indicators in the MSC.
This initial assessment will also involve stakeholders such as the Central Java Regional Government, Central Government, and Academics to confirm the validity of the information that has been obtained and get feedback from these stakeholders. It is hoped that the information gaps from the MSC initial assessment can be used as a frame of reference in making improvements to shrimp fisheries, and pave the way in initiating gradual steps towards environmentally friendly and sustainable shrimp cracker products in Central Java.
