REAL ACTION ON NATIONAL RIVER DAY WITH MULUNG CILIWUNG ACTIVITY
WWF-Indonesia has committed to reducing plastic waste in the Ciliwung River. The Mulung Ciliwung activity was again carried out with HSBC-Indonesia volunteers and collaborated with the Srengseng Sawah River Friends Community, and Dharmapala Akademi Pimpinan Perusahaan. The Mulung Ciliwung activity this time invited Bank Sampah Sejahtera from Bogor City to share knowledge about better waste management at the household scale. This activity was held on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at the Ciliwung River Srengseng Sawah Segment, precisely at Saung Bambon Riverside. This activity felt special because it coincided with the moment of commemoration of National River Day which is celebrated every July 27.
To further increase public awareness of the importance of reducing plastic waste at the household scale, this Mulung Ciliwung activity invited Bank Sampah Sejahtera. Representatives from Bank Sampah Sejahtera explained what a waste bank is, how to join and dispose of waste to waste banks and invited participants to manage waste properly and not reuse unused items so that no waste is wasted on a household scale. Not only that, Bank Sampah Sejahtera also showed the results of work from unused items such as tote bags, lunch bags, backpacks, and pouches made from plastic packaging to foot mats from sheets that are no longer used.
The participants of the activity came from various circles, namely HSBC-Indonesia volunteers, Panda Mobile volunteers, BPDAS Ciliwung, Sahabat Sungai Srengseng Sawah community, Dharmapala Akademi Pimpinan Perusahaan, Laskaru community, and other communities to local residents. All participants were very enthusiastic about mulung Ciliwung and ecobricking activities that were carried out simultaneously. This activity also collaborated with Jagakarsa Sub-district who helped take care of the transportation of waste from Mulung Ciliwung. The action carried out by the volunteers succeeded in collecting 62 sacks of waste weighing around 1,550 kg (1.5 tons) of waste with the dominant plastic waste. This activity is expected to raise awareness for the participants involved and the surrounding residents who participated in this activity.
Conservation Discussion as the closing of Mulung Ciliwung activity presented Sandiaga Uno as an environmental activist, Agus Haryanto (Ciliwung Program Site Manager WWF-Indonesia), Asdat (Chairman of Sahabat Sungai Srengseng Sawah), Solihin as one of the relawah of Sahabat Sungai, Rezza (representative of Laskar Krukut Luhur/Laskaru) moderated by Ari from Kedai Pena to discuss the current state of Ciliwung and hopes for Ciliwung River in the future. Sandiaga Uno regretted the current state of the Ciliwung River. In the past, the Ciliwung River was the center of civilization, which now seems to be the backyard of today's society.
Agus Haryanto as Ciliwung Program Site Manager hopes that in the future there will be no more Mulung Ciliwung activities because people are already aware not to throw garbage into the river so that the Ciliwung River is free from garbage. Together we can realize this hope, not only through Mulung Ciliwung activities but also through our own actions by reducing the use of plastic and being wiser in managing daily waste.
