PRESIDENT UNIVERSITY CARES #NASIBGAJAH
On Wednesday, March 4, 2015, President University held a discussion/seminar titled "Caring for the Fate of Elephants in Indonesia" in front of around 70 students from the departments of International Relations (IR), Law, Business Administration and others ranging from the class of 2012 to 2014 and several lecturers at the Charles Himawan Auditorium. This discussion aims to introduce WWF-Indonesia to students and increase student awareness regarding the issue of Sumatran Elephants which are decreasing in number over time.
In addition, this discussion event is also intended to invite students to become a more responsible generation with the environment, especially for protected animals and contribute to the solution of elephant and human conflict problems that often occur in Indonesia.
Representing WWF in this discussion as a resource person, Diah R Sulistiowati who is usually called Sulis, Forest and Terrestrial Species Campaign Coordinator, guided the discussion nicely. It can be seen from the enthusiasm of the participants who asked many questions during the discussion. One student from the Law Department asked about the law in Indonesia regarding the killing of protected animals. Sulis explained that the law is clear, but the implementation system and law enforcers are still weak.
Meanwhile, a student majoring in International Relations (HI) asked about the active participation for students that can effectively be done to help save this elephant. Sulis explained, "There are many things that can be done, including starting to pay attention to lifestyle, one of which is by choosing products that are more environmentally friendly which also do not damage the forest as a habitat for elephants in Sumatra. The products can be cooking oil, soap, shampoo, margarine, cosmetics, etc."
The discussion event "Caring for the Fate of Elephants in Indonesia" is one of a series of events of the national campaign #NasibGajah that has been initiated by WWF Indonesia previously in several cities since November 2014. On this occasion, 3 installations of #NasibGajah artworks were also placed in the campus area as a form of support from President University's participation in the #NasibGajah campaign.
The issue of elephant deaths and the reduction of the original habitat of Sumatran elephants in Indonesia is increasingly troubling.
The need for knowledge about elephants and their habitat needs to be known by every level of society, including young people and students. Students can act as agents of change and mobilize other layers of society in order to minimize the occurrence of human-elephant conflicts due to the loss of their habitat forests and strengthen government policies related to the protection of this wildlife.
