PANDA MOBILE AND ANIMAL CONSERVATION STORIES
By: Anjani Mutter (Volunteer Panda Mobile) & Natalia Trita Agnika
As a medium for conveying conservation messages to children, Panda Mobile often uses various stories about animal conservation. The storytelling method is chosen because it is interesting and easy to digest. Stories about animal conservation were used again when Panda Mobile visited Little Sunshine Kindergarten, Cibubur, on Saturday (15/10/2016). This was the fourth visit for the Panda Mobile team to Little Sunshine Kindergarten, Cibubur.
Bringing their signature six-wheel truck, the Panda Mobile team greeted the students. With pictures of various umbrella animals and beautiful colors, the presence of the Panda Mobile truck caught the attention of the children. The truck is also unique in that it can be transformed into a stage for storytelling. Kak Ryan, the storyteller who has often performed with the Panda Mobile team, greeted the students with the strains of his guitar.
He told a story titled "Tiger and Orangutan Hunters". The students aged 4-6 years listened attentively to the story. Through the story, the students learned what the difference between an orangutan and a monkey is because Kak Ryan narrowed down the information in the story. The love for endangered animals also grew in the children as they felt sorry for the orangutan cubs who lost their mothers to poachers. The simple delivery of the message through stories was very powerful.
Not only through fairy tales, stories about animal conservation are also conveyed through movies played on the Panda Mobile truck. Through a 42" monitor screen, students watched a movie titled "Sea Turtles". This short movie tells the story of the life cycle of sea turtles. Panda Mobile volunteers then talked about the differences between turtles and tortoises. By getting to know the differences and characteristics of wildlife, it is hoped that they can have a love and grow concern to help preserve it.
Through the whole series of Panda Mobile activities at Little Sunshine Kindergarten, it is hoped that many of the nation's next generation will become more concerned about animals and be moved to participate in environmental conservation. Panda Mobile activities are the first step in channeling messages to the younger generation who will later have a role in society to protect and preserve animals and the environment.
