By Annisa Ruzuar & Priska Raharjo
What is going on on the other part of the world as you read this article? Birth, marriage, graduation, demonstration, high level conferences, sadness, or even death. Various events are happening around the world today. A sense of curiosity had inspired Brandon Litman and Kyle Ruddick to document those various events happening in the world at the same day. The idea came up three years ago in a music concert, where musicians who met for the first time could create a wonderful harmony from their traditional music instruments. That moment brought the idea to create the same harmony through other universal language, movie.
“One Day on Earth aims to bring hope and encouragement to discuss important issues such as poverty, gender equity, education, environment, and then create positive changes. We live together in the same earth, and with a sense of togetherness we can deal many problems ahead,” Litman said.
Date of 10.10.10 was chosen to be the moment for making the work of the documentary, which is supported by WWF and about 60 other global institutions. Unlike other documentary-making process that requires the producer and film crew come to the location, One Day On Earth is created from collage videos sent by people from different parts of the world. More than 3.000 hours of videos collected and then selected to be a collage with the duration of 1 hour and 44 minutes. Three contributors are from Indonesia: Agus Makkie, Gunnar Numpuno, and Ramda Yanurzha. Their videos show religious processions in Petak Sembilan, Jakarta and cheering situation in The Art Market in Bandung Institute of Technology.
“Our contribution is only a fraction of the visuals in One Day on Earth 10.10.10. But it is a must to broadcast and screen this movie in Indonesia as a shared documentation of the world at the same one day, so that we may realize that we are not just residents of Indonesia, but also part of the world’s community,” said one of the contributors from Indonesia, Agus Makkie.
