Jakarta (25/04)-Numbers of environmental actions were conducted by WWF-Indonesia in a collaboration with Ancol Taman Impian at Earth Day celebration event carrying theme “Celebrating Earth Day, Let’s do Better for Earth,” Sunday (25/04), in Indah Beach, Ancol. Cycling activity around Ancol involving 440 Jakartans started this Earth Day event.
This outdoor activity named “edufunbike” aimed at encouraging public to practice low carbon lifestyle through the use of bycyles. Moreover it was taken place to transfer environmental knowledge to the public through educational posts they met during the cycling activity. There were four posts representing WWF’s thematic programs; Marine, birdwatching, Forest, and Green lifestyle posts.
After finish cycling, the participants were given green and blue umbrellas. Then they wrote down environmental message on the umbrellas. Next, they gathered at Indah beach, lined up in a formation while extending their blue and green ones forming “Do Better for Earth.”
The configuration of hundreds of umbrellas is a symbol of global warming. The message carried was urging people change their behaviour to reduce impact of global warming.
Previously, in the area of Indah beach, the wife of Jakarta’s Governor, Tatiek Fauzi Bowo and her entourage (waste community movement), Board of Directors from WWF-Indonesia and Ancol cleaned up the beach. The first lady showed enthusiasm collecting plastic waste while greeting some visitors.
A music ensemble using musical instruments made from recycled/used things by The Rombeng and performance by G-Pluck band closed the event. The participants of “Do Better for Earth” could take pictures with Pando, WWF’s mascot and two giant trash bins, the MURI receiver displayed during the event.
“Do Better for Earth” is a campaign initiated by WWF to design eco-friendly society by managing public awareness of behaviour change as a solution to create better future.
“I greatly expect that environmental message of practicing low carbon or green lifestyle carried through Do Better for Earth will be able to meet the target effectively. Because I believe, without changing behaviour, the earth will get close to destruction,” WWF-Indonesia Director of Marketing and Communication Devy Suradji said.
While CEO of PT. Pembangunan Jaya Ancol Budi Karya Sumadi hailed this WWF’s initiative. “As a green company, Ancol supports WWF’s campaign activities. Thus we facilitated “Do Better for Earth,” he said.
