NATURE X YOUTH INVITES MILLENNIALS TO SPEAK UP FOR NATURE
Millennials are an important group to be heard. Millennials are the defining generation who will be the next leaders and managers of this country and in the next five years. They will also determine how natural resources will be managed according to their needs. Given the importance of this young age group, WWF-Indonesia embraces and invites millennials to have concern and understanding of sustainable natural resource management. WWF strives to provide information and solutions for the sustainable use of natural resources in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's).
Along with the rapid development of communication technology today, WWF identifies that digital channels are the right choice of media to provide messages to the younger generation, in order to increase their awareness to maintain the sustainability of biodiversity in Indonesia. Therefore, the importance of digital channels is the main reason why WWF-Indonesia launched a new website www.wwf.id and introduced social media channels to the public in an event entitled "Nature X Youth".
This event has several objectives, namely: (1) Inviting the public to convey their aspirations related to the environment and natural resource management to the government through digital channels, as a campaign tool for millennials to take part in voicing nature; (2) Introducing WWF's ideas in nature conservation and sustainable use to improve biodiversity and natural resource management; (3) Determining the public agenda to discuss environmental issues on natural resources ahead of the presidential debate; (4) Introducing WWF-Indonesia's digital channels as the main media to convey messages to the public. With this digital channel, WWF-Indonesia is expected to reach the public and millennials in Indonesia.
"Nature X Youth" was held on March 16, 2019 at Ice Palace, Lotte Avenue Jakarta. The event was also enlivened by supporters from various backgrounds, including Indonesian musicians Nugie, Tanita, Nona Ria, and Figura Renata, comedian Adinegoro Natsir, environmental activists Davina Veronica, Gede Robi, Nadine Alexandra, Gita Syahrani, and renowned designer Kleting Titis Wigati. Not only these talented figures, experts from WWF-Indonesia were also present to share inspiring stories from their experiences while fighting for the conservation and preservation of Indonesia's nature with WWF. At the "Nature X Youth" event, the public also gained experience and stories about Indonesia's nature conservation efforts from conservationists from various fields, including the Panen Raya Nusantara Consortium, Hutan Itu Indonesia, Youth Leader in Sustainability, Marine Buddies, and Earth Hour.
In addition to millennials, WWF also involves as many people as possible, and in particular WWF partners, champions, volunteers, ambassadors, and supporters in carrying out a joint action that can inspire a wide audience, to jointly find the best solution for environmental problems that occur in Indonesia.
"The future of humans and nature is in the hands of young friends. The efforts made by WWF will not mean much without the participation of the public, especially the millennials who will dominate various roles in government, business, and community movements in the next five to ten years," said WWF-Indonesia CEO Rizal Malik.
Not stopping there, WWF-Indonesia also invites the public, especially millennials to convey their aspirations, opinions, and hopes about Indonesia's nature on personal social media accounts through the #SepekanUntukAlam movement which carries the theme #NatureMatters. This movement is expected to encourage the government to strengthen their commitment in realizing sustainable development in Indonesia, maintaining biodiversity, and mitigating climate change to ensure the welfare of current and future generations.
Some public figures participated in the #NatureMatters movement, including Nugie, Jefri Nichol, Davina Veronica, Putri Marino, Chicco Jerikho, Ari Irham and many more public figures who will participate. "The condition of the Indonesian sea is sad, there is a lot of garbage, especially plastic waste. I want Indonesia's sea conditions in the next five years to have no more plastic waste," said Jefri Nichol in his video. Other public figures also expressed their aspirations and hopes about Indonesia's natural conditions, at least for the next five years.
Unknowingly, we actually have a close relationship with nature. It is time for all of us to build connectivity with nature and raise our voices together to defend Indonesia's biodiversity. For a prosperous life for current and future generations.
