HOTEL DE BRAGA BY ARTOTEL, BANDUNG, COMMITS TO USING SUSTAINABLE PALM PRODUCTS
As a concrete form of implementing (sustainability) actions, Hotel De Braga by Artotel Bandung expressed its commitment to procuring certified sustainable palm oil products. This commitment can be realized through the "Strengthening Collaborative Action for Sustainable Consumption and Production" initiative by WWF-Indonesia. The main objective of this initiative is to encourage various businesses/industries to procure sustainable and certified products/commodities, one of which is sustainable palm oil.
Sometimes we do not realize that palm oil-derived products are widely used in our daily lives (for example: soap, cooking oil, margarine, toothpaste, etc.) not to mention also by businesses/industries including the hospitality industry. By using sustainable and certified palm oil products, industry players indirectly contribute and are responsible for the sustainability of the environment where the palm oil is produced. Not only environmental conditions but also participate in improving the economic conditions of the surrounding community and recognizing the rights of indigenous peoples in the region (social). This is because these products in the production process must be carried out based on NDPE principles (No Deforestation Peatland and Exploitation) so that they can then be recognized and certified as sustainable commodities (palm oil).
On the other hand, Indonesia itself is known as the world's largest producer and consumer of palm oil. Unfortunately, not many industry players (especially users of palm oil derivative products) in Indonesia are committed to using sustainable palm oil in their production processes. The commitment of Hotel De Braga by Artotel, Bandung, to procure/use sustainable palm oil products is seen as a positive step by the hospitality industry, amidst the lack of absorption of sustainable palm oil products in Indonesia.
WWF-Indonesia survey results in 2020 showed an increasing consumer interest in sustainable palm oil-based products, with 82% of respondents stating they were willing to switch to such products. This fact underscores the importance of sustainability commitments for the hospitality industry, which not only have a positive impact on the environment but can also meet the expectations of increasingly environmentally conscious consumers. Angga Prathama Putra, as Sustainable Commodities Leader of WWF-Indonesia, also emphasized that sustainability cannot be achieved by nature conservation efforts alone. "The hospitality industry plays a key role in economic and environmental sustainability. With its significant impact, collaboration with this sector is essential to achieve the change we need," he said.
Previously Hotel De Braga itself has also implemented various concrete steps related to sustainability to become an environmentally friendly hotel. Some of the steps taken include implementing VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume) technology in their air conditioning system, which is more energy efficient and environmentally friendly than conventional systems. The hotel is also implementing energy-efficient lighting technologies such as LED lights and light sensors that automatically adjust energy usage.
Their sustainability measures don't stop there. The hotel also uses a wastewater recycling system for plant watering in their green areas, which cover 20% of the hotel's total land, as per government regulations. Meanwhile, to reduce the use of single-use plastics, the hotel has eliminated the use of bottled water by providing water dispensers and glass cups for its customers. In terms of waste management, they have a waste recycling program where organic waste is processed into animal feed that is supplied to their duck suppliers, helping to reduce waste and support the local economy.
Furthermore, Hotel De Braga has now also committed to using environmentally friendly products, such as RSPO-certified sustainable palm oil derivative products (Roundtable Sustainable Palm Oil). Reza Farhan as General Manager of Hotel De Braga by Artotel revealed that with the intensive engagement with WWF-Indonesia, the procurement of palm oil products complements their concrete steps in implementing sustainability, especially in terms of responsible production and consumption. "We are grateful to WWF-Indonesia for introducing and assisting us to be committed to procuring/using sustainable palm oil products," he added.
