For three days from Tuesday (22/02) to Thursday (24/02), the group led by Heart of Borneo Network Initiative Coordinator Adam Tomasek saw firsthand the condition of wildlife habitat, especially orangutans, and had dialogue with community groups in Teluk Aur Village.
The first location visited was the Aur Protected Lake and the orangutan habitat in Sungai Keturun. The group was divided into two groups, with the first group heading to Sungai Keturun and the other visiting the Aur Protected Lake.
On this trip, the group was not lucky to see orangutans, but they were quite satisfied because they were able to see a variety of animals in this location, especially a variety of bird species that are rarely found. After the two groups met at the location of the orangutan, they were able to see the orangutans.
After the two groups met at Sungai Keturun, they then continued their journey to the planting site for raba fruit seedlings (Buchanania sp.), one of the orangutans' favorite fruits. At this location, 20 planting holes had been prepared, with each participant planting one tree. At this location a week ago, the community still saw orangutans, marked by the presence of 1 new nest with fresh leaves.
The group was treated to tuak and shown a collection of antique items such as jars, teapots, betel nut devices, and candlesticks. The trip then continued to Pengelang Protected Lake and a hospitality at the house of the head of Djaung 1 hamlet.
On the way back to Teluk Aur Village, the group stopped by Lindung Aur Lake, which has an area of about 600 m2. It was at this location that on January 29, 2011, four siluk donated by WWF to the community were released by the Regent of Kapuas Hulu.
The field visit ended with a dinner at the residence of the Regent of Kapuas Hulu, A.M. Nasir S.H. On that occasion, WWF-Indonesia conveyed the importance of the role of West Kalimantan civil society in sustainable development in the HoB region.
While the Regent of Kapuas Hulu expressed his appreciation for WWF's efforts in building the Sungai Lung Microhydro Power Plant (PLTMH) and siluk assistance in the Aur and Empangau Protected Lakes. He also hoped that a good synergy between WWF and the local government towards sustainable development in Kapuas Hulu can always be established.
