The number of hotspots increase in May 2008. In the previous months, the hotspot level tended to decrease (January: 977, February: 750, March: 453, and April: 248), but in May (until May 27th), it increased to 1,827 nationally (source: NOAA 18 Data via Ministry of Forestry). In May, hotspots mostly occurred in Riau (584), West Kalimantan (344), Jambi (291), and West Sumatra (221). Meanwhile, the peak hotspot period happened on 17 (206 hotspots) , 19 (272), 20 (219), and 23 May (240) .
