EARTH HOUR INDONESIA 2016, A COMMITMENT TO REAL ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE FROM THE WORLD'S CULTURAL HERITAGE
Borobudur, March 19, 2016 - Tonight, at 20.30 - 21.30 local time, at least 32 cities in Indonesia participate in the global movement for climate change, Earth Hour. Now in its eighth year in Indonesia, Earth Hour carries the global theme 'Shine A Light on Climate Action'. By turning off lights and electronic equipment that are not in use for one hour, we are invited to ignite real action to change lifestyles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for the preservation of the earth. in Indonesia will be marked by the participation of two world-renowned Indonesian icons, Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple.
Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple, two world cultural heritage sites in Indonesia, are not left out to be part of Earth Hour 2016. The participation of two Indonesian icons, among more than 70 others in participating cities, symbolizes Indonesia's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
"I remind you that one hour tonight is a symbol of the beginning of our commitment. Let us together realize a lifestyle change that will undoubtedly bring good changes to the sustainability of our earth," said Dr. Efransjah, CEO of WWF Indonesia. Climate change is a real threat to the preservation of natural resources, biodiversity and our survival. "Earth Hour is another reminder of the power each of us has to make the changes needed to reverse climate change. Each of us has an obligation to contribute to this change in order to ensure that our children and grandchildren can still enjoy the resources and wealth of our earth for their welfare," continued Dr. Efransjah.
For the participation of the two icons of Indonesian cultural heritage, especially Borobudur Temple, which is the first time to be part of Earth Hour, Director of Marketing and Cooperation of PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan & Ratu Boko (Persero), Ricky SP Siahaan said "We realize that world cultural heritage, Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple, cannot be separated from the impact of climate change. Therefore, Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple are part of the Earth Hour movement to help broadcast the importance of lifestyle changes as a way to fulfill Indonesia's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.".
Meanwhile, the Head of Borobudur Temple Tourism Park Unit, Chrisnamurti Adiningrum emphasized that the threat of global warming makes us realize to change our lifestyle by saving energy. "One of the efforts made is by turning off lights or electronic devices for 1 hour on March 19, 2016. Borobudur Temple participated in the Earth Hour event as a form of commitment about energy-saving behavior that has been done," said Chrisnamurti Adiningrum.
In addition to these two global icons, at least 70 icons supported by 37 Earth Hour Indonesia communities in various cities will also mark Indonesia's participation in Earth Hour this year. The participation of Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple in Earth Hour 2016 is fully supported by PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan & Ratu Boko (Persero), Borobudur and Prambanan Conservation Center, and UNESCO. The Earth Hour celebration at Borobudur Temple today is centered at Aksobya Field since 19.30 WIB which is filled with various art performance activities of the community around Borobudur who are members of the UNESCO program.
Regarding this participation and collaboration Mr. Shahbaz Khan, Director and Representative of UNESCO Office in Jakarta said, "UNESCO Climate Change Initiative includes activities to monitor the impact of climate change on UNESCO sites including World Heritage Sites and biosphere parks. Earth Hour activities, including their active participation in the workshop on environmental sustainability jointly organized by UNESCO and WWF at the Community Gallery, Karanganyar Village, Borobudur."
Meanwhile, Iskandar M. Siregar as the Head of Conservation Section from Borobudur Conservation Center said that "Borobudur Conservation Center fully supports Earth Hour activities at Borobudur Temple. In addition to providing awareness of the importance of environmental conservation, Borobudur Temple's participation in Earth Hour is also expected to further foster public awareness of the preservation of Borobudur cultural saujana in particular, because it is an integrity that cannot be separated from Borobudur Temple as a World Heritage that has been recognized by UNESCO since 1991."
