COMMITMENT OF TOURISM PLAYERS TO MINIMIZE ENERGY USE IN THE EARTH HOUR MOVEMENT
Energy is a very important thing to help with daily human activities, from simple things like charging a cell phone to powering an entire building. One factor that is very necessary for the use of energy is tourism. Without energy, the tourism industry cannot provide its visitors with a comfortable place to rest or to fill their dive tubes.
As the tourism industry grows and there are more and more tourist services, it is feared that this will accelerate the depletion of energy stocks on Earth. But this need not be feared anymore, seeing the enthusiasm of the tourism service groups that have joined Signing Blue (called Blue Allies) who are suffering from the pandemic, can still show their commitment to saving energy use, by participating in the global Earth Hour movement.
Blue Allies did some interesting activities in participating in this global movement, one of which was to use candles in their stairwells as lighting when the switch off was done. "Our hotel has been participating in Earth Hour for a long time, usually besides using candles, we also have live acoustic and sometimes fire dance. This activity is also interesting for visitors, especially foreign tourists." said Mr. Marak Setiadi as General Manager of The Haven Seminyak, Bali. The same activity was also carried out by Lotus Bungalow located in Candidasa. The hotel installed candles along the path leading to their main pool. Ms. Natalie, Sustainability Coordinator, stated that after joining Signing Blue, the hotel became more concerned about the environmental movement, and participated in Earth Hour for the first time. Group Member Artotel Group also participated in a unique way, they did a Switch Off 60+60, where they turned off lights and electronic devices that were not in use for two hours.
In addition to the direct movement, Signing Blue members also participated in virtual activities organized to welcome the Earth Hour movement. Where in the Earth Hour welcoming event is represented by The One Legian Hotel, which tells about its commitment that has been done in minimizing energy use in its hotel. The enthusiasm of Blue Allies members from the recreational boat group was also not lost in welcoming the Earth Hour event. One of them is Sea Trek Sailing Adventures, represented by Ms. Nita CJ, who gave an overview to all event participants about what recreational boat tours are like, what animals are found in their work area, and provided information about what they do to keep the marine ecosystem healthy. This activity was carried out as a series of Earth Hour Movement entitled "Virtual Tour Cakrawala Nusa 2021" organized by Earth Hour Bali.
Although tourism services are in a downturn due to the pandemic, this Earth Hour Movement proves that they still have a commitment to protect the Earth and its environment. Hopefully in the future, hopefully the commitment and enthusiasm of the tourism services that are members of Signing Blue will still remain and be able to apply their commitment not only in minimizing energy, but in other aspects in order to jointly achieve the vision and mission of creating responsible and sustainable marine tourism.
