Jakarta, 6 September 2012: WWF-Indonesia officially launches the consumer guide application to choose eco-friendly seafood for BlackBerry users after the similar guide was printed in pocket version in 2011. Currently, it is estimated there are more than 3.5 million authorized users of BlackBerry in Indonesia; so, it is expected that the socialization of eco-friendly seafood can continue. BlackBerry users can download it for free via AppWorld just by doing a search using the keyword “Seafood Guide” and installing from the list that appears.
“For me this is an incredible breakthrough; now we no longer have to carry the printed version every time we want to order or buy seafood. Saving our sea has never been so easy!” expresses Nadine Chandrawinata, or known as Nadine, former Miss Indonesia 2005 who is also a diving hobbyist and marine environmentalist.
The WWF-Indonesia Seafood Guide application for BlackBerry helps the users to get information about selecting seafood. Users can easily access any type of species from each seafood category; for example, “Best Choice” means that seafood can be consumed, “Consider” means the consumption of that seafood should be reconsidered, and “Avoid” means the population of that seafood is drastically declining, so the consumption should be avoided. Those categories are sequentially marked under green, yellow, and red themes.
This application also helps users to locate the nearest eating place that provides sustainable seafood; conversely, users can inform the location that provides such seafood menu. In another part, users can also search for recipes related to sustainable seafood, and they are also allowed to upload their favorite recipes for other users.
Wawan Ridwan, Director of WWF-Indonesia Marine Program also says, “This Seafood Guide is an alternative to invite people, especially seafood fans, so they want to change their seafood consumption pattern by considering the seafood’s population status in the wild, as described in this seafood guide. The change of consumption pattern is expected to be able to change our fisheries production pattern from purely profit-oriented to become sustainable business. Consumers, in this regard, play an important role for the market concept. A total of 58 types of seafood from the natural catchment and nine types of the cultivation categories are listed in the guide. It helps consumers to find alternatives for the species that should be avoided because the population continues to decline.”
This is the first eco-friendly consumer guide for BlackBerry users, not only in Indonesia but also in the world. With around 3.6 million users of BlackBerry smart phones by the end of 2011, WWF-Indonesia is optimistic that this application will be able to bring a change in our fisheries sector; it is expected that at the end of 2013 the number of eco-friendly seafood products in the market can grow from currently zero to become 2.5%. In addition to that, in the near future, the users of Android-based smart phones can also use the application that is currently in the process of development.
